Experience Washington State Wine

Just minutes from downtown Yakima lays Washington State’s most important wine grape growing region: the Yakima Valley.  Join CWU’s own Global Wine Studies graduate Brian Fairleigh for an experience of tasting and touring at some of Washington State’s most highly regarded wineries.  Enjoy the beautiful vistas and peaceful calm of the Valley’s vineyards while sipping world-renowned red and white wines.  Learn about the history of Washington’s wines, wine tasting techniques, how wine is made, and much more.  Whether you’re new to the world of wine or a veteran of many tastings, this trip has something for everyone.  A relaxing afternoon in wine country awaits you.

Preregistration for this event is required for planning purposes & a minimum of 10 participants are required.

Cowiche Canyon

Screen shot 2009-10-08 at 1.57.52 PMCowiche Canyon, located on the outskirts of Yakima, features wildflowers, great rock formations and nine old railroad trestles. The word Cowiche, sometimes spelled Cowychee, is said to mean footbridge between the valley and the mountains.

If there is enough snow we  will go  cross country skiing, otherwise we’ll hike.   After  a 2 hour refreshing outdoor experience we will go to  Gilbert Cellars for a light snack  and wine tasting. http://gilbertcellars.com/

Time – 12:30 – 5PM Saturday February 6th Where: Meet in the hotel lobby and the vans will be waiting for us!

Cost – with cross country skiing – $35 Hiking only – $25  light snack & wine tasting not covered minimum 10 participants.

What to Bring: Warm clothes for outside winter activity, hiking boots or hiking shoes. Please indicate if you would like the cross country skiing option so that we can make sure to have enough equipment for everyone.

Yakima Cultural Center

The Yakama nation Museum opened in 1980 and is one of the oldest Native American Museums in the United States. The 12,0000 square foot exhibition hall is the result of years of hope, thought, and effort on the part of the Yakama people.

Details: There is no cost to this activity however for planning purposes we will need to know who would like to visit the Cultural Center and when you would like to go either Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Self Guided Activities

City Walk

Get a sense of the history of downtown Yakima by taking this self -guided walking tour. You will experience outstanding architecture including the Gilbert Winery constructed of local basalt rocks in 1899  and The Seasons, A performing Arts Center renowned for its acoustics.  It was built in Italian Renaissance Style in 1918 as a 1st Church of Christ Scientist.
