Seattle University has an exciting, dynamic opportunity for a Resident Director to join our community.

The Resident Director (RD) provides leadership and direction for a residential community that fosters student learning and development, contributes to a vital and engaged student experience, and promotes Seattle University’s mission. The RD is responsible for the management and coordination of operational functions associated with a highly effective residence hall environment. In addition, the RD serves in a collaborative role with other Housing and Residence Life (HRL) staff in the overall development of departmental programs, services and operations. This position is also actively involved with Student Development divisional programs and initiatives.

The RD is a full-time, twelve month, live-in professional position and reports directly to one of the Associate Directors of Housing and Residence Life. Below is an abbreviated version of the RD’s essential functions and responsibilities. A more comprehensive job description is available upon request.

Essential Job Functions Staff Development and Supervision

1. Supervise and develop Assistant Resident Directors (ARD), Resident Assistants (RA) and Desk Assistants (DA) .

2. Motivate staff and empower them to create environments that promote student learning and development.

3. Serve as an advisor to departmental committees.

Student Leadership and Development

1. Work with students to promote personal growth, academic excellence, civic responsibility, compassion and respect for others students in the halls.

2. Educate students about Seattle University code of conduct, residence hall policies and procedures, and facilitate community standards.

3. Serve as student conduct administrator and Residence Hall Council (HC) advisor.

Program and Living-Learning Community Development

1. Coordinate social, educational, spiritual and community development programs.

2. Create vital and engaged residential learning communities using student needs assessment and program evaluation strategies.

3. Meet with Associate Director for Residential Education, faculty/staff advisors, and RAs to plan and implement a cohesive residential learning community model.

4. Partner with Campus Ministry (Resident Ministers and Jesuits in Residence) to provide spiritual support in the halls.

Fiscal Management

1. Responsible for fiscal management of building accounts that include: programming, office supplies, hall council events, and student staff payroll.

2. Monitor and track building expenditures and maintain accurate fiscal records.

Facility Management

1. Maintain the physical structure of the residence hall in conjunction with Associate Director of Housing Operations & Services and Facilities Operations staff.

2. Meet regularly with building maintenance and custodial supervisors.

3. Supervise and manage building operations, service and information desks, mail and package service, key inventories, safety and security equipment, and computer labs.

Administration

1. Serve as part of on-call duty rotation, as well as supervise RA “duty coverage” in the residence hall.

2. Assist with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of HRL’s strategic plan, mission, and goals.

3. Serve as the HRL liaison to other student development functional areas and other academic support units.

4. Assist with summer activities or projects.

5. Perform other duties as assigned by HRL and the Division of Student Development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, psychology, education or related and two years previous experience as a resident assistant in an educational setting demonstrating responsibility for assisting with the full range of responsibilities associated with being a residence director or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field is strongly preferred and two year’s previous experience in residence life or other student development and educational settings demonstrating responsibility for assisting with the full range of responsibilities associated with being a residence director. The ideal applicant will possess the ability to use student learning and development theory, a commitment to the concepts of student-centeredness, community, service and social justice, diversity, integration of academic and campus life, and holistic development. Excellent interpersonal, crisis management, managerial, and community development skills are necessary as well as an understanding and/or openness to the values of Jesuit/Catholic Higher Education.

Experience & Education Required

  • Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel or closely related field, and three or more years of full-time Residence Life, or closely related, experience; or Bachelor’s Degree and six-years of full-time residence life, or closely related, experience, required. Experience with assessment required.
  • Experience in organizing staff selection and staff training required.
  • Experience working on administrative projects required.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with students, faculty members, and staff from diverse groups required.

Southwestern Oregon Community College is located in Coos Bay at the heart of Oregon’s scenic south coast – known for its miles of open public beaches, vast forests, clear lakes and rivers, sand dunes, abundant wildlife and recreational opportunities. The RD:
1. Develops a vibrant, responsible, and educational residential learning community by:

HFS provides on-campus housing to over 5,000 student residents and operates multiple food-service units that serve the entire campus community. The Resident Director assumes the major leadership role in providing a sense of community within the residence hall through the use of student development theory and building operations management.  The Resident Director has overall responsibility for developing and administering a comprehensive residence hall program that meets the goals of the Department of Housing & Food Services.  This position requires high student contact activity and the ability to manage periods of high stress.  The Resident Director should be able to work as a change agent, possess sensitivity to and understanding of multicultural issues and support a diverse environment.

The Resident Director reports to an Administrator for Residential Life and is an active member of the Residential Life Team and has responsibilities in carrying out the direction of the Residential Life Program. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, solid problem solving and administrative skills a, effective methods for managing and coaching large and diverse populations of college students and eagerness to support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values and culture of Residential Life, Housing and Food Services, and the University of Washington.

The HFS Residence Life program is extensive. Facilities include nine residence halls housing about  5700, 75 single students, 179 in apartments for family housing, and 919 in apartments for single students and families provided through public-private partnerships.

Key Responsibilities include:

Supervision of Staff:

• Supervise the Resident Adviser staff, ensuring consistency and support of Departmental standards and expectations
• Participate in student staff recruitment efforts, including screening and interviewing
• Contribute to Resident Director and Resident Adviser training through presenting, advising, coordinating and assisting as necessary

Advising Student Groups:

• Support student leadership development by advising a hall council or other student groups
• Promote collaboration between Hall Council leaders and Resident Adviser staff
• Participate in student leadership trainings, roundtable discussions and assessments

Building Operations Management:

• Consult and work in collaboration with custodial, facilities maintenance, desk services and dining services to assess and address building, community, and individual student needs
• Maintain clear and accurate records of building charts, forms, and other necessary records

Student Conduct:

• Manage student conduct caseload efficiently and effectively; maintain records with high attention to detail
• Facilitate educationally purposeful conduct meetings with students emphasizing personal responsibility and an understanding of how one’s behavior impacts self and others
• Utilize educational sanctioning in accordance with established Residential Life Conduct Process philosophy and guidelines

Crisis Management:

• Understand and implement departmental/university emergency/crisis response protocols
• Appropriately collaborate and consult with other Student Life professionals regarding students needing additional support/resources

Professionalism:

• Support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values and culture of Residential Life, Housing and Food Services, and the University of Washington
• Provide leadership within the Residential Life team and facilitate productive interactions with all staff

POSITION COMPLEXITIES

• Limit extended vacations to Summer Quarter, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Manager, Student Conduct – University of Calgary

Student and Enrolment Services at the University of Calgary currently invites applications for a Regular full-time Manager, Student Conduct .

The Student Services portfolio within Student and Enrolment Services is committed to providing student-centred programs and services that enhance the student experience, student learning and student development. The Manager, Student Conduct plays an important role on the Student Services leadership team. The Manager oversees the University of Calgary’s Non Academic Misconduct Policy, and serves to administer the policy, including oversight of the Student-at-Risk Evaluation Team. The Manager provides leadership and support to the entire campus community around student crisis response and management, threat assessment and management, and is responsible for providing education to the campus community about the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy, student discipline, crisis response and critical student behavioural issues.

This position will report to the Associate Vice-Provost, Student Services and will work closely with the Vice-Provost, Students, as well as senior leadership on the Student and Enrolment Services team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
• Serves as University of Calgary’s primary student conduct officer in administering the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy.
• Investigates reports of alleged student non-academic misconduct.
• Collects judicial data and implements incident tracking system to ensure that the entire campus community is reporting incidents of non-academic misconduct in a consistent fashion.
• Develops the University’s comprehensive Threat Assessment Protocol through consulting with external experts, developing training programs with key campus and community constituents, and conducting thorough internal consulting.
• Works with individuals, departments, and community organizations to support students deemed at-risk with a primary goal of ensuring the student at-risk is not a danger to him/herself or others in the campus community.
• Serves as chair to the Student-at-Risk Evaluation Team and serves as case manager for students managed under the policy.
• Educates the campus community about the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy, the threat assessment protocol, and student behavioural issues.
• Updates the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy annually and prepares a report for the General Faculties Council (GFC) on cases heard through the policy.
• Ensures the Associate Vice-Provost (Student Services) is briefed on all student conduct issues.
• Represents Student and Enrolment Services on university committees, and at campus and community functions.

Requirements:
• Master’s degree preferred in area of higher education, student affairs, educational leadership, counselling or social work.
• Two years of demonstrated experience working with student judicial affairs, student behavioural issues, or student discipline within a university environment.
• Ability to effectively advise/counsel others..
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple departments, organizations and people in sensitive and complex situations.
• Effective communication skills and ability to model these skills to students and staff.
• Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and major trends/issues surrounding university students and student behaviour.
• Ability to effectively prioritize and successfully perform duties autonomously.
• Demonstrated ability to work positively and effectively with students.
• Experience with the development and coordination of educational programs based on personal responsibility, community standards and sensitive student issues.
• Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines
• Thorough knowledge of University policies, procedures and requirements including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act)

Assistant Director for Student Engagement, University of Idaho

We are seeking an energetic, dynamic individual to join our Housing and Residence Life team.  The Assistant Director for Student Engagement will oversee the student conduct process and serve as the Residence Hall Association advisor.

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in higher education, counseling or education, two to five years experience in Residence Life/Housing.  Candidate will also need to have experience advising a Residence Hall Association or similar large scale student group along with two to four years experience as a conduct officer.  Also, the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to interact with diverse populations.  The candidate should have the ability to: demonstrate leadership, organizational and decision-making abilities; demonstrate competence in public speaking, public relations and written and oral communications; work evenings and weekends as needed.

The preferred candidate will have knowledge of student development theory, principles and practices; experience coordinating large and small scales programs; demonstrate the ability to perform and lead others in program related activities; have the ability to work well with campus constituencies; the ability to demonstrate commitment to diversity and social justice issues; experience with judicial management software.
