<h2 id="pagetitle">Area Coordinator &#8211; Residence Life</h2>
<p>Willamette University seeks candidates for the full time, live-in, position of Area Coordinator for Residence Life. Area Coordinator will assume responsibility for the overall operation of four to six residence halls or apartment buildings (280-370 students). Provide direction to build communities that are culturally rich, socially robust, inclusive, and respectful of diversity. Assist in the development of residential procedures and programs that support the mission a liberal arts education.  Assist in planning and implementing a smooth transition from a conventional residence hall model to a residential commons/colleges model.</p>
<p>Work involves a variety of duties and responsibilities in administration of the Residence Life program. Because primary functions of the position include programming, advising student groups and to responding to student emergencies after normal working hours, it is a live-in position requiring significant evening and weekend availability. The position requires a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills for most areas of responsibility (supervision of staff, counseling students, crisis intervention, and conduct hearings). The position also requires use of master keys and access to confidential information regarding students. As most work is performed indoors, incumbent has minimal exposure to hazards or adverse environmental conditions.  However, special activities may require incumbent to operate outdoors and experience inclement conditions.  Supervises several student staff members.</p>
<h3>Duties and Responsibilities</h3>
<p>The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following functions which, are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance:</p>
<p><strong>Community Development</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Provides leadership for staff and students in developing communities which:
<ol>
<li>promote a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents,</li>
<li>support students&#8217; personal, academic, and social development,</li>
<li>respect the rights of others and promote multicultural understanding and consideration of individual needs in a group living environment,</li>
<li>promote responsible citizenship and development of leadership and personal life skills.</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Maintains visibility in the community by regularly interacting with residents, attending programs, visiting staff and residents in their rooms, and eating meals in the campus dining facility, etc.</li>
<li>Advises one to three hall councils and assists in the development of the concepts of self-governance and community participation. Meets regularly with student leaders.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Supervision</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Supervises eight to thirteen Resident Assistants and indirectly assists in supervising the remaining Residence Life student staff.  Meets weekly with complex staff as a group and at least bi-weekly with individual staff members.  Provides on-going feedback to the staff he/she directly supervises.</li>
<li>Provides the resources, guidance, and support necessary for staff to be successful in their positions. Provides for on-going staff development opportunities for staff.</li>
<li>Establish a sense of unity and teamwork among the staff members. Provides team-building opportunities to promote good staff relations.</li>
<li>Confronts inadequate performance and, when necessary, terminates the employment of any staff member he/she supervises (in cooperation with the Associate Director of Residence Life.)</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Programming</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Along with residents and other staff, develops and implements regular educational, social, and recreational programs and activities. Promotes student-faculty contacts. Coordinates the programming within the complex.</li>
<li>Supports staff in programming efforts through training, attendance, resources, and guidance.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Counseling and Referral of Students</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Be available, approachable and responsive to students. Counsels and refers individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs and University/Residence Life procedures.</li>
<li>Mediates conflicts between students or staff as necessary.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Student Conduct</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Promotes student rights and responsibilities through the fair and consistent administration of the University code of conduct, policies, and procedures.</li>
<li>Serves as Hearing officer for assigned area.  Includes conducting Administrative Hearings and writing related conduct letters.  Serves as advisor to a conduct board.</li>
<li>Oversees student staff responsibilities in communication of community expectations of students and response to behavioral issues.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>General Program Administration</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Participates in the design of and transition to a new structure involving residential commons complexes with live-in faculty, graduated housing options and high levels of self-governance and programmatic autonomy.</li>
<li>Communicates departmental needs and instructions to staff and students. Solicits staff and student input in decision making, as appropriate. Facilitates effective communication between all staff and students.</li>
<li>Keeps supervisor informed regarding hall activities, staff efforts, and student concerns. Updates staff on administrative issues that are relevant to residents &#8211; safety, assignments, maintenance, housekeeping, etc.</li>
<li>Shares responsibility with other live-in administrative staff for responding to medical, safety, and security emergency needs and to students experiencing personal crises after hours. Works with and refers to appropriate campus services. Along with other live-in administrative staff, provides on-call coverage when any residential facility is occupied.</li>
<li>Executes assigned administrative tasks thoroughly and promptly.</li>
<li>Coordinates area staff efforts to achieve departmental goals and administrative tasks in a timely manner.</li>
<li>Maintains harmonious working relationships with students, faculty and other University staff.</li>
<li>Implements procedures outlined in Residence Life staff manual. Along with other professional staff, updates the manual.</li>
<li>Attends weekly staff meetings with other Residence Life professional staff. Meets weekly with supervisor.</li>
<li>Effectively manages financial accounts. Disperses departmental monies responsibly and prudently.</li>
<li>Safeguards the confidentiality of discussions with students and of departmental administration by exercising discretion in communication and handling of all confidential information and materials.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Additional Responsibilities of the Area Coordinator </strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Assists in overall administration of the Residence Life program.  Assists in development and evaluation of departmental policies, procedures, and goals.</li>
<li>In cooperation with the Associate Director of Residence Life, develops and presents student staff training sessions and other developmental meetings for the student staff.</li>
<li>Along with other Coordinator&#8217;s, develops and implements a selection process for the RA&#8217;s.</li>
<li>Orients incoming Willamette and Tokyo International University of America students to the hall and campus.  Provides programs and activities which supports cross-cultural understanding.</li>
<li>Educates staff and residents on safety and security concerns and appropriate emergency response procedures.</li>
<li>Reports unsafe conditions, damage and other facilities issues to appropriate University staff.</li>
<li>Represents Residence Life on University committees as needed.  Provides leadership for committees and/or special projects as determined.</li>
<li>Assumes other duties as assigned by the Associate Director or Dean of Residence Life.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Qualification Standards</h3>
<ol>
<li>Any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.  A Bachelor&#8217;s degree is required; a Master&#8217;s degree in Student Personnel or related discipline is preferred.</li>
<li>One year of residential staff experience is required; two years residential staff experience is preferred.  Experience with residential commons/colleges is preferred.</li>
<li>Possess a sound background in student/human development theory.  Ability to articulate philosophy of Residence Life programs.  Committed to expanding knowledge and understanding of student development and social awareness issues (e.g. alcohol and other drugs, sexual harassment and assault, gender issues, international and multicultural issues, eating disorders, mental health, etc.)</li>
<li>Demonstrates ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures and backgrounds.</li>
<li>Ability to communicate effectively in English.  Ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely.  Ability to model open, direct, and honest communication.  Possess well-developed assertion and confrontation skills.</li>
<li>Possess interpersonal and counseling skills.  Possess excellent basic helping skills and displays empathy and regard for other&#8217;s concerns.  Ability to demonstrate sensitively to the diversity of individuals&#8217; needs, backgrounds, life and work styles.  Ability to practice a developmental approach to behavioral problems.  Ability to develop strong rapport. </li>
<li>Ability to successfully facilitate student groups of various sizes.  Teach students and staff skills necessary to be effective leaders.  Provides guidance to group leaders and coordinates efforts of group&#8217;s members.  Generates enthusiasm and motivates members to achieve group goals.  Encourages and considers different points of view.</li>
<li>Ability to develop and maintain a staff team.  Ability to coordinate staff efforts so that departmental goals are met efficiently.  Ability to motivate staff members to excel in their job responsibilities.  Ability to provide support while holding staff accountable.</li>
<li>Ability to function competently under pressure and effectively diffuses crisis situations.  Ability to demonstrate sound judgment.</li>
<li>Ability to manage time and tasks to accomplish responsibilities in a timely manner.  Ability to work independently as well as accept direction.</li>
<li>Ability to advise students in programming and present needed recreational, social or educational programs.  Ability to be an effective designer and presenter of programs.</li>
<li>Ability to execute the physical activities required to perform the responsibilities including, but not limited to, regular standing, sitting, and being mobile; continual talking and hearing in person and on the phone; and all other activities required to perform the essential functions.</li>
<li>Desirable training in any specialized areas pertinent to higher education (e.g. leadership development, alcohol education, multicultural education, community service, counseling, etc.). </li>

<h3>Compensation:</h3>
<p>$28,400 annual salary, apartment, meal plan, and full benefits.</p>

These responsibilities include fulfilling the full range of managerial and oversight services during all phases of planning, design and construction of major new facilities, major renovations, other renovations, interior design,  landscape and exterior projects, safety/security/ADA compliance projects and utility development and maintenance projects over a variety of project delivery methods ranging from in-house design and construction to management of contract architectural, engineering, and construction services.</span></p>

<p>Portland State University invites applicants for the position of Area Coordinator of Residence Life. Portland State University is a nationally acclaimed leader in community-based learning and educational reform and serves more than 26,000 students with a mix of 76% undergraduate and 24% graduate students.</p>
<p>Position: PSU is seeking two Area Coordinators who will report to the Director of Residence Life to contribute to the development and management of a comprehensive Residence Life program. This staff will provide leadership and direction for up to 45 paraprofessional staff to ensure the oversight of the operation of 10 buildings that house approximately 2000 residents (including PSU students and their domestic partners and family members). The staff is expected to contribute to the fostering of an environment for learning and social interaction that supports the mission of the University and to promote and model teamwork and establishment of an inclusive, supportive, collaborative, service-oriented multicultural environment. The Residence Life Program will support the mission of the University through strategic planning efforts in collaboration with academic affairs and student services. Residence Life Program staff will respond to resident student issues, concerns, and emergencies; develop appropriate committees; work cooperatively with other University departments to create co-curricular and experiential learning experiences for students; contribute to stewardship of campus climate, and contribute to assessment and evaluation of programs within student affairs. This is a full-time, live-in, fixed-term, 12-month unclassified, unrepresented, overtime exempt appointment. Candidates for this position are subject to a criminal background check.</p>
<p>Minimum Qualifications<br />
 A Bachelors Degree with one or more years of residence life experience and in living learning community development. The ability to work effectively on a team. Strong problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal and group relations, strong analytical skills, and strong oral communication skills. Scheduling flexibility to meet residents’ needs. Must pass a criminal background check.</p>
<p>Other Preferred Qualifications<br />
 A Masters Degree and two years experience working in a college or university environment. Experience working with traditional first-year college transition issues and academic success. Staff training or experience in leadership development, supervision, program planning and evaluation.</p>

<p>The Operations Manager is a full time 1.00 FTE, professional  position responsible for overseeing all aspects of the residential conferences program, the OSU  Homestay Program, and hospitality services for University Housing &amp; Dining Services.  This  position additionally contributes to the overall success of the UHDS Operations &amp;  Facilities Unit and University Housing &amp; Dining Services in the housing operations area supporting special  projects and initiatives such as opening, closing, and the INTO OSU partnership, a collaborative venture  serving international students.  This position is a leadership role, requiring vision, a  proactive attitude, ability to work autonomously, and to respond to crisis situations.</p>
<p>A  personal and professional commitment to providing excellent customer service and creating  inclusive environments is a core value of University Housing and Dining Services.</p>
<p>Annual salary  is $42,000 -$48,000 (based on 12-month appointment) and includes a comprehensive benefits package.</p>
<p>Minimum  qualifications include three years of progressive work experience in an area related to  the work assigned and a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in any field; or, eight years of progressive work  experience in an area related to the work assigned.  Demonstrated leadership ability and staff  supervision experience.</p>
