Director of Residence Life at University of Alaska Anchorage

Position Summary:

The Director of Residence Life reports to the Dean of Students. The Department manages 3 residence halls and 2 apartment complexes with a total capacity of just under 1,000 beds including 10 living learning communities, an annual budget of approximately $800,000, and a workforce of 8 full-time staff and as many as 60 part-time and student staff. This position is responsible for providing leadership, administration, and oversight for the Department of Residence Life, a comprehensive residential life program. The Director supervises the Associate Director of Residence Life, three Residence Coordinators, the Alaska Native and Rural Outreach Program Coordinator, and the Office Manager. A highly visible member of the University community, the Director interacts regularly across unit lines to support students’ academic and personal growth. The Director represents the Department of Residence Life to senior university administration while leading a highly respected unity whose mission is building learning-centered communities. The successful candidate will be a creative student affairs professional with a demonstrated proficiency in developing a residential curriculum and incorporating best practices into organizations.

       Develop and maintain relationships across campus units through effective collaboration within the University community.

       Coordinate and provide 24 hr critical first responder emergency services for students, staff, and faculty, with physical and psychological needs. Develop and implement strategies minimizing harm to self or others. Minimize University’s exposure to liability. Application of ADA requirements and risk management strategies related to programs, services, and staffing.

       Set a vision through effective leadership and supervision to meet departmental, divisional and University priorities. Maintain a departmental mission consistent with that of the University.

       Provide for living environments that promote student learning and development. Integrate curricular and co-curricular student experiences which compliment students’ classroom experiences. Implement residential curriculum consistent with the academic values of the University.

       Provide long-term programmatic leadership and direction for UAA’s residential programs and services including the development, implementation and evaluation of policies/procedures related to the management and advancement of UAA’s residential communities. Ensure effective supervision of all unit staff.

       Develop, analyze, forecast, and evaluate departmental budgets ensuring effective utilization of unit resources. Actively promote programming efforts to ensure appropriate occupancy levels in support of debt service payments.


The Director of Residence life will work in close collaboration with the Directors within that sphere of the Dean of Student Office (Disability Support Services, Student Conduct, Multicultural Affairs, Native Student Services, CARE Team, Student Health and Counseling Center) as well as the Director of University Housing, Dining and Conference Services. The Director has primary responsibility for leadership of all aspects of the Department of Residence Life at UAA. Specific areas of responsibility include oversight and guidance for the development and implementation of comprehensive residential services consistent with CAS Professional Standards for Residential Life Programs including:

-Demonstrated knowledge and experience at the university level in student affairs professional principles and practices; budget development and management; and executive level decision-making.

-Broad knowledge of college student development, best practices in student affairs/residential life programs, as well as current issues/trends in these fields.

-Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, inclusion, access, and multicultural issues in higher education environments as well as proven background using multicultural competency leadership skills to advance institutional diversity initiatives and core values.

-Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents, staff and university community members to create inclusive environments in residential communities as well as demonstrated ability to promote effective communication among diverse populations.

-Experience in organizational leadership, personnel management, decision-making, and conflict management.

-Experience in assessment of student services activities and proven knowledge of the use of information to improve functions, services, and programs.

-Demonstrated ability to perform and lead in a team environment, build consensus, and lead organizational change.

-Commitment to student-centered philosophy in student affairs.

-Demonstrated knowledge, skill and experience with all aspects of residential life programs at a university.

Required Experience:

Applicants must possess progressively responsible experience in student affairs administration directing, managing, supervising, a coordinating student services in a university setting. Minimum 7 years of experience working in higher education with at least 5 years being in residence life or a closely related area with significant student contact. Work experience must include comprehensive personnel management and supervision, strategic long-range planning and implementation, leadership in the interpretation and analysis of federal, state, and institutional requirements associated with residential programs, development of effective professional and student staff training programs, management of complex budgets associated with a department of residence life and/or housing unit.

Typical Education or Training:

Master’s degree or higher is required. Degrees strongly preferred in College Student Personnel or related field.
