Residence Life Coordinator at University of California Merced

UC Merced opened in Fall 2005 with a long-range goal to house 50% of the students on campus. Our growing program currently houses 2200 students on-campus and 400+ off campus in a master lease until 2020. In 2018 we will open 700 additional beds followed by another 1000 beds in 2020 almost doubling our current on-campus population.

The mission of Housing and Residence Life at the University of California, Merced is to provide clean, safe, student-centered residential communities. We cultivate our living-learning experience to support academic accomplishment, diversity and respect for human dignity, and student success. Our sound financial management and business principles enable us to expand our programs and facilities to serve the changing needs of the students and university community.

The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) facilitates opportunities to engage the staff and residents in actualizing our living-learning communities (Gender Inclusive, Afro-Hall, Fiat Lux Scholars program, etc.). The incumbent oversees the development of inclusive and interactive communities, programming, and conduct adjudication. Additional responsibilities include the selection, training, and co-supervision of 50+ student staff.

Each RLC coordinates a large-scale project such as Conduct, Diversity, Leadership, Recruitment and Selection, and Training throughout the academic year based on skill, experience, knowledge and/or interest.

The RLC counsels and refers individuals and groups of students regarding student conduct and personal concerns; serves as liaison to Dining Services, Police, Health and Counseling Centers, Academic Departments and Student Life; facilitates productive relations with our core programming partners Calvin E. Bright Success Center, Health Education, and Career Services; provides weeknight and weekend emergency response on a year-round basis; serves on departmental and campus-wide committees; and assists in coordinating the summer school housing program.

Duties and responsibilities of this position may be at variable hours. The RLC participates in after-hour on-call duty coverage during weekdays, weekends, holidays, breaks, and summer.

Compensation Package: The incumbent is assigned annually to ​​a lightly furnished, 2 bedroom apartment, professional development funding, and a $1000 meal plan.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel or related field AND two years of direct live-in experience.

• Knowledge and understanding of student development, student learning, leadership development, and community development theories and practices. Ability to implement strategies for creating an inclusive residential community.

• Experience as a Conduct Hearing Officer.

• Experience performing after-hour and emergency response protocols and effectively resolving crisis situations (fire evacuation, responding to incidents throughout complex, etc.).

• Skills to accurately interpret, enforce, and explain University policy. Operates as a team focused manager and leader with excellent written and oral communication skills. Self-directed with strong time management and administrative skills. Proven skill to take a concept/idea and put it into action.

• Ability to establish short and long-term goals and lead staff to achieve goals and fulfill expectations.

• Comfortable working in a growing environment with constant change.

• Proven success facilitating training, leadership, skill development, and diversity workshops. Strong programming experience including work with learning communities, theme-based housing programs, and faculty, collaborating with other offices and academic areas, managing programming budgets.

• Experience coordinating the effective recruitment and selection of student staff.

• Sensitivity to working effectively with diverse students, guests, and colleagues. Understands the needs of first-generation students.
