Associate Director of Residential Life, Eastern Washington University

The Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is a full-time, 12-month, professional and, reports directly to the Senior Director of HRL. This position is primarily responsible for staff recruitment, selection and training, professional staff supervision, crises and conduct case management, leadership development, and delivering a comprehensive residential program supporting student success. The Associate Director will work in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Residence Education on the programming and residential curriculum for residence hall students and student staff. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with campus colleagues in an effort to find opportunities to create transformative experiences for our students. This position will maintain a focus and priority on building a staff with the skills and abilities to work with the diverse and first generation student populations that EWU serves.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision/Training/Management (35%)

a) Select, hire, supervise and evaluate performance for the Residence Life Coordinators (6)
b) Indirectly supervise 55-60 student Community Advisors and 20-25 student Office Workers
c) Responsible for designing and implementing the training for RLCs and Community Advisors, in collaboration with the Sr. Director, Assistant Director, Coordinator, and Campus Partners.

Crises Management (20%)

a.) Monitor Maxient incident reports and facilitate student and staff outreach as necessary.
b) Participate in a rotational (every 3-4 weeks) 24-hour on-call Emergency/Duty Coverage for after-hours emergencies and ensure appropriate follow-up and communication.
c) Follow up with RLCs, Dean of Students staff, and EWU police with appropriate interventions for students in crises or conduct cases as needed.
d) Create, train, and implement procedures for Community Advisors and RLCs in collaboration with Dean of Students staff, Title XI staff and EWU police.
e) Respond to alleged incidents within the residential community. Assist staff in facilitating educational discussions within the communities impacted.

Academic and Student Development (20%)

a) Collaborate with Assistant Director and Coordinator of Residential Education on academic programming, multicultural programming, and residential curriculum.
b) Develop and implement activities to engage the residential and campus community in creating an environment that is welcoming and affirming to all identities.
c) Develop strategies and procedures to implement all aspects of programming.
d) Responsible for the leadership development within RHA, NRHH, and Hall government.

Administration and Assessment (15%)

a) Develop annual programming and operations budget based upon department goals and objectives in conjunction with Senior Director of Housing and Residential Life.
b) Manage budgets and follow department and University purchasing guidelines.
c) Develop and assess student learning outcomes for residential programming and staff trainings.
d) Develop and implement departmental emergency management plan in collaboration with Assistant Director for Facilities and Planning and EWU Police.
e) Oversee the assessment of residence hall climate and satisfaction of students and staff.

Leadership (10%)

a) Facilitate positive campus partnerships to enhance the living learning environment for students on campus.
b) Oversee the summer camps operations in collaboration with event planning, custodial, and facilities.
c) Serve on campus wide committees.
d) Other duties as assigned

This position requires meetings and events after hours and on weekends.

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree and at least five years of post-master’s experience with progressive responsibilities in residence life or housing.
• Successful experience supervising professional and paraprofessional staff.
• Experience managing budgets.
• Experience developing and staff training and professional development opportunities.
• Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
• Experience managing crises and emergencies.
• Excellent problem solving skills, including experience analyzing and resolving conflict, successfully navigating group dynamics, and effectively building teams.
• Working knowledge of regulations affecting residential life programs (i.e. Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, Title IX, etc.)
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with campus colleagues.
• Knowledge of and experience with best practices for residential life in the following areas: support of student learning and success; academic achievement; diversity and inclusion; social integration; wellness and well-being; life and career preparation; empowerment and accountability; and values clarification.
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education or related field.
• Experience working with other student affairs departments or committees including developing partnerships for joint initiatives.
• Experience working with, and advising, student leadership.
• Experience working with Star Rez and Banner.
• Bilingual Spanish.
• Experience with program development and assessment of residential curriculum.
• Experience with strategic planning
