Assistant Director, Residence Life at Washington State University

Washington State University seeks a dynamic, student focused, and innovative professional to join our team as an Assistant Director of Residence Life.


The Assistant Director of Residence Life is a central member of the administrative staff and reports to the Director of Residence Life. The Assistant Director’s primary responsibilities are: directly supervise and evaluate 4-6 live-in Residential Education Directors in the WSU residence hall system; through live-in professional staff indirectly supervise paraprofessional staff; in collaboration with the live-in staff, ensure coordination of desk operations in several residence halls; coordinate the planning and presentation of staff training initiatives; coordinate and advise up to three department committees. Provide support and response to student emergencies including participation in an on-call rotation.  Serve as departmental liaison with designated University partners; respond to daily administrative tasks and student/staff concerns; and assume departmental responsibilities as directed.

Minimum/Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience.  Must be willing and able to keep regular hours and work some evenings and weekends.

Additional requirements include supervisory experience of graduate hall directors, paraprofessional staff or other personnel; demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and practice of participatory management and community standards; and demonstrated competence with Microsoft Windows and MS-Office computer software.

Preferred qualifications:  Successful candidates ideally will have three (3) years post-master’s experience working in a college or university residence hall system or group living environment.  Additional preferred qualifications including supervisory experience of full time live-in residence hall staff and demonstrated experience with the following: staff training and development; large group presentations; living, learning communities/academic success programs and faculty partnerships; developing community in the residence hall and college campus environment; and a commitment to and/or experience advocating for diversity.

Moreover, the ideal candidate will possess the ability to: work with students and administrators in a broad range of situations and demonstrate a genuine concern/interest for the welfare of students, work with a diverse student and staff population, and exhibit a commitment to and knowledge of student development and academic success.
