Area Coordinator- East Campus at Portland State University

Portland State University is hiring for the Area Coordinator- East Campus position.  This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Residence Life program for a specific area of campus (East Campus). The Area Coordinator supervises the Broadway and Ondine Residence Directors as well as a team of Resident Assistants. Duties include assisting in the management of administrative operations, staff training and supervision, student development programming and working with our First Year Experience program. The Area Coordinator lives in a campus building and is expected to foster healthy environments for learning and social interaction that support the mission of the University and to promote and model teamwork and establishment of inclusive, supportive, collaborative, service-oriented, multicultural environments. The Area Coordinator contributes to collaborative strategic planning efforts; ensuring Student Affairs’ response to student issues, concerns, and emergencies; develops appropriate policies and procedures for management of Residence Life; provides stewardship of campus climate; and assesses and evaluates programs and services.

University Housing & Residence Life’s mission is to provide housing options for Portland State students while providing a unique living experience in Portland’s urban environment through actively engaged residential communities that promote student success.

This is a live-in, full-time, fixed-term, 12-month unclassified, unrepresented, overtime-exempt appointment. Applicants for this position are subject to a criminal background check.

Minimum Qualifications

– A Master’s degree with one or more years of professional residence life experience.

– Ability to work effectively on a team.

– Strong problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal and group relations, strong analytical skills, and strong oral   communication skills.

– Scheduling flexibility to meet residents’ needs.

Preferred Qualifications

– Master’s Degree with two or more years professional experience working in a college or university environment.

– Previous experience supervising a full-time professional(s) and/or graduate assistant(s).

– Experience working with traditional first-year college transition issues.

– Experience working with non-traditional (upper division, international) student issues and academic success.

– Staff training or experience in leadership development, supervision, program planning, and evaluation.
